Flood Prevention Drainage

Scotland’s cold climate – particularly in winter – can adversely impact not just atmospheric travel conditions for drivers, but also the road surface itself. In the case of the B8033, which is the main dual carriageway as you leave Dunblane, due to a period of very wet and very cold winter weather, the road flooded so badly it had to be closed for safety reasons.

Our experienced DAMM team utilised specific CCTV systems to carry out an investigative survey. We ascertained that the issue causing the flooding was a partially collapsed, old drain – a ‘cundy’. Because of the age and condition of the existing drain, it simply wasn’t capable of dealing effectively with the increased volume of rainwater that inclement conditions had created. We set to work and excavated and installed a 600ml diameter outfall pipe to tie into the existing 1200mm diameter storm culvert. We also excavated and installed a 2400mm diameter manhole on top of the existing cundy to allow flooding to be encapsulated within the chamber and discharge down the newly installed 600ml diameter outfall pipe. We also enhanced this new system via road gullies (that also tie in to the improved outflow system.)

The extensive drainage improvements DAMM implemented in this case will help prevent adverse weather conditions negatively impacting road-users’ journeys.
