UV Liner Installation
A rural residential area in Fife was plagued by regular drainage issues, affecting adjoining private homes. Water pooling and flooding became common occurrences, with random discharge points appearing in residents’ gardens. Upon investigation, it became clear that these issues were not isolated, but rather indicative of a broader problem affecting the neighbourhood. The erratic water discharge was causing significant inconvenience and potential damage to the properties.
The first step in addressing the problem was to clear the immediate blockage using a high-pressure jetting unit. This allowed us to temporarily alleviate the symptoms and gain access to the underlying drainage infrastructure. A thorough post-clearance CCTV survey was then conducted, revealing the ‘root’ cause of the problem. Tree roots had infiltrated the drainage pipes, creating blockages and disrupting water flow. The old, existing pipework also exhibited multiple structural defects, including numerous damaged joints along a 60-metre section. These open joints not only facilitated the root infestation but also compromised the integrity of the overall drainage system.
Despite clearing the blockage with HPWJ, the CCTV survey highlighted that the problem would inevitably recur. The structural integrity of the pipes was compromised, meaning the pipe would continue to erode, and the tree roots would likely grow back, causing repeated blockages and water discharge issues.
To provide a lasting solution, we opted to install a UV liner within the problematic pipe section. This approach was chosen for its effectiveness in reinforcing the pipe structure and preventing future root infiltration. At DAMM Environmental, we recently invested in the Speedylight + UV LED Curing System, acquired from RSM Lining Supplies in partnership with Sewertronics. This state-of-the-art equipment offers several advantages:

- Negotiates 90º Bends: The system’s capability to handle bends makes it ideal for complex pipe networks.
- All-in-One Package: Integrated power supply with no interconnecting cables simplifies the setup and operation process.
- Implementation
The installation process was planned and executed accordingly:
- Preparation: The affected pipe section was cleaned and prepared for lining.
- Liner Installation: The UV liner was inserted into the pipe and inflated, ensuring a snug fit against the pipe walls.
- Inspection: A pre-curing CCTV inspection was conducted to confirm the correct placement and integrity of the liner.
- Curing: Using the Speedylight + LED Curing System, the liner was cured in place, solidifying its structure and creating a durable barrier against root infiltration and pipe deterioration.
